wmlro.com: Artefacts found in shipment in Dubai

A shipment of furniture was the cover for the smuggling of artefacts from Iraq as it passed through Dubai.

Dubai's status as a leading Gulf port was again used by criminals.

Like other major shipping countries, Dubai is targeted by criminals who aim to hide their product amongst valid trade, making it difficult to identify the small proportion of criminal activity amongst the large volumes passing through Dubai daily.

But the criminals were not aware of heightened screening of all shipments from unstable countries - including Iraq.

The artefacts date back to around 300 b.c. , with some much more recent - around 1,000 years old.

There are statues, coins and other items.

Dubai customs say that they have arrested an Arab antiques dealer who was allegedly involved in the shipment.
