F I Tech: getting banknotes into banks

As the drive to reduce counter-time by customers intensifies, Diebold has installed more than 25,000 cash deposit machines in the USA.

The installations began in 1991 but as law and technology has moved on, deposit machines have become both more widespread and more accepted by customers.

Diebold's latest machines recognise cheques and, for cash handling, mixed denomination currency - a particular problem in the USA where notes have, historically, been very similar.

A "two in one" machine allows a single transaction to capture notes in one slot and cheques in another but incorporating them into a single receipt with a print out of cheques. Diebold says this is a differentiating factor because, if a cheque machine jams, the cash portion will continue to operate.
